Band Coaching

Clarinet / Flute

Beginning students will learn the fundamental workings of the flute and clarinet including the embouchure (how the mouth is shaped to make certain sounds) and proper breathing techniques. Beginners will also learn notes, major keys, posture, tone production, basic music theory, note reading and practice plans. As students advance they will learn more difficult musical pieces, techniques and theories that can be applied to the flute and clarinet. This includes things such as rhythms, scales, and melody lines. Advanced students have the option of moving into genres and styles that use different techniques and theories that are more specialized including intonation, vibrato, and performance techniques.

Saxophone

Classes for beginners will focus on tone quality, articulation, rhythm, reading music, and playing in time. Students will learn breathing and fingering techniques as well as structured routines for practicing at home. Intermediate players will begin by mastering the 12 major scales and arpeggios in straight and swing patterns. Basic 12-bar blues structure will be introduced and students will learn to improvise using the blues and pentatonic scales. Students will begin to develop an appreciation for different styles of jazz through listening and ear training. At the advanced level, students will practice sight reading and will become comfortable soloing in various keys and styles. Various Minor and Modal Jazz structures will be taught, with a heavy emphasis on improvisation.

Vocals

The vocal program will introduce a variety of song styles while focusing on correct breathing techniques, diaphragmatic breaths, vocal exercises, pitch work and vocal scales. As students progress more complicated song styles will be introduced. Lessons focus on developing the vocal style the student wants to learn such as pop, rock, rhythm and blues, country and rap.

Drums

The drum program progresses from the basics such as understanding the parts of a drum set, posture and balance, basic beats and exercises, coordination, tabs and drum tuning. Intermediate students will build on their basic skills with more complex exercises, buzz rolls, tempo technique and drum lines. Advanced classes combine previous techniques learned with more complicated exercises, accents, theory, shuffle and soloing (part 1). In the master level classes students will be taught the most complex exercises, phrasing,  movements dynamics, time signatures and polyrhythms. Lessons can also be geared to different musical styles such as rock, metal (“double bass”), cascara/Latin, reggae and Motown.

Keyboards

The keyboard program begins with finger positioning and posture, basic exercises, minor and major chords and scales, musical symbols and note positions, all taught to popular songs. In the intermediate level students will build on their basic skills with more complex exercises, pentatonic scales, chord triads, ear training, (part 1) and improvisation (part 1). In the advanced level students will add to their knowledge by learning more complicated exercises, fifth and sixth chords, harmonic and melodic minor scales and improvisation (part 2).  Lessons are geared to the students interest in songs and music styles.

Guitar and Bass

The guitar program follows a progressive program of instruction. Beginning classes focus on skills such as basic knowledge of the instrument, tuning, minor and major chords and scales and tab reading. After the basics, intermediate level students will learn more complex exercises, power and bar chords, solo technique (part 1) and beginner ear training. Advanced classes combine previous techniques learned with more complicated exercises, advanced strumming and picking, harmonics, ear training (part 2) and improvisation (part 1). In the master level classes students will be taught the most complex exercises, harmonic scales, modes, tapping and improvisation (part 2). During lessons, popular songs are introduced making the learning experience more fun and rewarding. Lessons can also be geared to different musical styles such as rock, blues, country, metal and jazz.
